In January 2026 Omni Pets Are Able to Convince Chris Packham to Finally Transition His Poodles!
Thankfully in January 2026, Omni Pets plant-based dog food company featured support to help him with transitioning his beloved Sid and Nancy to a plant-based diet and away from dangerous raw feeding (that could even be our next pandemic).
For all these years, he has been feeding organic raw venison from a local butcher to Sid and Nancy and even told viewers this on an episode of GoggleBox. This was such a concern to me as a passionate vegan vet, as there are SO many dangers with raw feeding compared to safe and kind plant-based dog nutrition.
We have 14 published studies (read the science here) showing the safety of complete plant-based dog food, and to date there are NO published studies showing health benefits with raw feeding, in fact only 85 studies showing dangers (we counted every study on this page and yes there are 85!) when dogs (and risks to whoever handles the food) are fed a raw food diet as shown here - Dangers of Zoonoses in Raw Food Diets.
It is a relief that knowing how much Chris loves his Sid and Nancy, that they will no longer be fed a raw food diet, but a balanced plant-based diet which could ensure a longer and healthier life which is exactly what Chris wants, and what we ALL want for our dogs (read here how dogs fed vegan diets had the best health outcomes from published studies and read about 17-year old Fidel the rescue Chihuahua here!).
We do think that the highly innovative bacterial fermentation protein dry and wet food MicroBell that we stock (Pet Product of The Year) and our best seller Give A Dog A Bean made from sustainable and non-GMO Faba Bean Protein would have been a better fit for environmentalist Chris Packham, but at least he is moving away from raw feeding onto plant-based with Omni dog food.
We do not stock Omni products as the brand's dry food products (except for the Omni Sensitive) as well as all their topper 'meats' are made using soya as a protein source and we only stock soya-free dog foods at Just be Kind. As a vet I deal with too many dogs with sensitivities to soya even though it is high in protein.
Omni had mentioned moving to using Faba Bean Protein in their Omni Adult, Puppy and Senior dry foods at the beginning of 2025, but we see that all these dry foods still contain soya as a protein source. Yarrah dry dog food and Benevo puppy food also include soya as a protein source in their dry food and we do not stock these soya-based brands either even though they source organic non-GMO soya.
Just be Kind is the very first company to use high protein, hypoallergenic, non-GMO Faba Bean Protein (see factsheet here) in our wet foods - Give A Dog A Bean and Jumping Jack. It is more expensive to add to dog foods compared to soya due to its exceptional quality, but most importantly, your dogs love it!
Has Chris Packham always been vegan?
“No, I’ve been vegetarian since my early 20’s, I thought I would just cut down on meat and then I found after a break from it that it made me ill so I gave it up. I carried on eating fish but then, of course, I recognised that our fish stocks are seriously imperilled -and that’s an understatement of enormous magnitude, many are on the brink. It became clear that eating fish was unsustainable but in any case, I had never toed the line that fish didn’t feel pain and all that nonsense.”
“However it was factory farming that finally pushed me from vegetarianism to veganism, after I’d been to an indoor, zero-grazing dairy unit. It was spick and span, remarkably clean, and none of the animals were being abused there but they never went outside. They did three lactation cycles and had their calves taken away instantaneously after birth.”
“I got in the car after spending the day there and that was it – game over. I knew I couldn’t trust myself or food labelling claiming good quality, organically produced, animal-husbandry -friendly dairy products. If I’m not in control of myself, how am I going to be in a position to ask people to do something which I think is a better idea?”
How I mirror all his views as a vet I just accepted that dairy cows were happy and well cared for, but the reality is so far from that.
Everything that Chris Packham stands for is protecting our biodiversity and fairness and by choosing to feed our pets a balanced healthy plant-based diet, we are supporting all his ideals.
💚These facts that Chris Packham shares keep me going as a vegan vet, keep me inspired and so incredibly hopeful for our future of plant-based feeding! He says that –
“Science tells us that we need just 25 percent of people to change their thinking about something and then it cascades quickly. By the time you get to about 27 percent, you’re on a roll, and in a very short space of time, the entire population will change.”
Wow now that fills me with SO much hope for our future of veganism for us as humans and for our pets!
