Microbell dog food made from microbial fermentation

An independent company in Germany called Marsapet have released the world's first complete dog food made using this pure microbial fermentation protein to enhance the health of your dog while providing exactly the same amount of protein as you would get in meat with none of the inflammatory toxins!

This comes straight off their website and is exactly why we want to feed it to all our dogs in the UK -

Special Features of Marsavet MicroBell Dry Food for Dogs

  • Innovative protein source: Microbial protein that is bio-identical to animal protein.
  • Sustainable production: Significantly reduces resource consumption and CO₂ emissions.
  • Gluten and grain-free: Ideal for dogs with sensitive digestive systems.
  • Excellent tolerance: Perfect for all breeds and age groups.
  • Optimal for dogs with allergies.
  • Tasty recipe: Natural ingredients ensure an excellent taste experience.
  • High nutrient density: Supports vitality, strengthens the immune system, and promotes digestion.
  • Contains sweet potatoes as an easily digestible carbohydrate source.

(I have to add to that as a vet that this protein is very high in one amino acid called glutamic acid that gives an umami flavour that dogs crave, but it also soothes the gut lining compared to animal proteins which is what makes it unique!)

Our dog Ruff LOVES the biscuits as we rushed to buy them off the German site just last week (they have a mild smokey smell), they are small enough for ALL dogs to enjoy, and he has never made such beautifully formed poos before for me to pick up on walks....and being a plant-based dog who only eats (and is fed) the highest quality foods, that is saying a lot!

Ingredients: Dried Sweet Potatoes, Peas, Microbial Protein (10%), Dried Potatoes, Pea Protein, Coconut Oil, Dried Beet Pulp, Flaxseed, Yeast Extract, Sunflower Oil, Inulin (source of FOS).

Analysis: Crude Protein 23.0%, Crude Oils and Fats 10.0%, Crude Fibre 3.5%, Crude Ash 7.7%, Calcium 0.9%, Phosphorus 0.6%, Moisture 8.0%, Usable Energy 3,495 Kcal

What is this unique Bacterium Methylococcus Capsulatus that originated in the Hot Springs in Bath UK?

Methylococcus capsulatus is a methanotrophic bacterium which means that it uses the fossily fuel methane as an energy source while producing a protein-rich biomass. This characteristic makes it particularly valuable for making highly sustainable protein in HUGE quantities - innovation at its finest!

This specific strain, Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath), was isolated in the 1970s in the UK from a thermal water source in a spring near Bath - the city we know that is famous for its hot mineral springs! The conditions there, particularly the presence of methane as an energy source, created an ideal environment for these methane loving bacteria to thrive. Imagine having an organism that thrives off the very fossil fuels we are trying to reduce globally?!

What makes this strain particularly remarkable is that it is not only found in hot springs but also in other methane-rich environments, such as soils, lakes, and oceans, where it plays a crucial role in the global carbon cycle.

Scientists discovered that Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath), due to its rapid growth and high protein content, is the ideal solution for sustainable protein production. Since its discovery in the 1970's, it has been extensively researched and developed in biotechnological processes to serve as an alternative protein source.

Its extraordinary ability to efficiently convert methane into high-quality biomass has led to its recognition as one of the most successful sources of microbial protein today!

MORE ABOUT THIS EXTRAORDINARY BACTERIAL SPECIES USED AS PROTEIN IN DOG FOOD!

Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath) is an extraordinary bacterial species that offers numerous advantages as a protein source and is ideally suited for your dog's nutrition. The choice of this microbial protein is based not only on its high nutrient density but also on its excellent digestibility.

Do you love the science? Read more here about the complete genome sequence of Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath)

Scientific studies show that the protein derived from Methylococcus capsulatus contains ALL essential amino acids that dogs need for healthy development. Unlike conventional animal protein sources such as beef or poultry, which often contain allergens, this bacterial protein is hypoallergenic, making it an excellent alternative for sensitive dogs. Dogs with food intolerances especially benefit from this gentle protein source, which is easy to digest and does not burden the gastrointestinal tract as it is high in Glutamic acid (as shown below) that soothes the gut lining.

Microbial protein very high in glutamic acid

Another crucial aspect is sustainability. While conventional meat production requires enormous amounts of water and agricultural land and is associated with high CO₂ emissions as well as high methane emissions from cows (!), Methylococcus capsulatus is so very different. The bacterium directly feeds off methane and converts it into high-quality biomass, significantly reducing our environmental impact! According to scientific reports, microbial protein production requires approximately 90% less land and 70% less water than meat protein production (wow!).

Besides these ecological benefits, the safety of this protein source is also a crucial factor. Cultivation takes place under strictly controlled conditions in modern fermentation facilities, eliminating contamination with heavy metals, antibiotic residues as used in animal agriculture, or pathogens. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has classified microbial protein from Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath) as safe and they have also confirmed its very high quality in this article.

Thanks to these outstanding properties, Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath) was chosen as the main protein source for Marsavet Dry Dog Food MicroBell. This innovative food not only provides a sustainable solution for your dog's nutrition but also delivers ALL essential nutrients in a highly digestible and hypoallergenic form. As a result, dogs receive a protein-rich, healthy, and eco-friendly diet that simultaneously minimises their environmental footprint - you cannot get better than that!

I travelled to Glasgow on the 18th March to speak to 450 vet students at the Pet Nutrition Symposium there. What perfect timing to tell them about the protein source of the future. I QUITE LITERALLY WANT TO SCREAM FROM THE ROOFTOPS HOW AMAZING THIS NEW PROTEIN SOURCE IS AND IT ARRIVES NEXT WEEK IN OUR JUST BE KIND SHOP!!!!

It starts with being used to enhance the health of our dogs, then once we know how good it is, it can be used in human health protein supplements (to hopefully completely replace whey protein from milk), and then it could be used in burgers to replace meat, and sausages to replace pork.....wow what an incredible thought as it could revolutionise veganism and all start with our dogs!!!!

“Sustainability is a motherlode of innovation.” – Harvard Business Review
Delivering value with a new product and capturing value in return as with a profit without regard to environmental and sustainable impact is not innovation, it’s exploitation. Innovation is usually driven by necessity, with our backs up against the wall. It also often emerges from the bottom up, because those on the “frontlines” working directly with customers or clients have the best and most immediate insights into their needs and pain points.
