In times of turbulence we have the promise of change

Plant-based pet food and exciting innovation offers the veterinary industry hope as the bubble bursts on corporatisation

Dr Arielle speaks to vets at London Vet show

I booked a stand and the opportunity to speak just 10 days before the biggest veterinary event of the year - the London Vet Show.

As a passionate vegan vet, I have to confess to being absolutely terrified of even entering the huge hall filled with the veterinary industry giants - corporate meat-based pet food companies that now own thousands of veterinary practices in the UK (Nestle Purina having a share in corporate chain IVC Evidensia that have bought out thousands of independent vet practices, and Mars Petcare owning not only Royal Canin but almost all of the top specialist vet practices in the UK when they bought out the Linnaeus group).

Corporatisation has taken hold of almost every sector of the veterinary industry like a great unstoppable wheel, with big pharma and corporates holding the biggest, most expensive stands at the Vet Show and making the biggest impact financially, as well as raw food companies that have been given the 'green light' to grow by UK Petfoods declaring them 'safe' which threatens us to face up to a possible next pandemic.

UK Petfoods who vets turn to for nutrition advice, are causing the slaughter of far more animals and fish as they pander to the meat-based companies that they support and are also just following the money (very cheap to produce raw pet food - it doesn't even need cooking and very easy to market as pets like it) - even down to the cheap non-sustainable plastic wrapping that it comes in so a lot of money to be made by these companies at such a huge cost to our planet and future! What chaos caused by chasing the money instead of health and sustainability (not to even mention welfare!)

The meat-based pet food corporates justify this increase in the use of animal products in pet foods by telling us that it is 'sustainable to use the byproducts of the animal agriculture industry' when it absolutely is NOT as shown by this article - The Urban Legend of Pet Food's Environmental Impact.

The entire veterinary industry is in turmoil as we found out just last week (end of November 2025) that after 100 YEARS (!), the RSPCA for the very first time is faced with making staff redundant - what a welfare nightmare - who will be there when we have animals in homes being abused and neglected? Isn't this what we chose to become vets for - to help animals?

All the money has gone into lining the pockets of wealthy billionaires (who probably do not even own any pets!!) as the cost of veterinary care soars with corporatisation - such sadness for an industry that is all about care for animals!!!

Just Be Kind Dog Food found its corner of calm and gives us all such hope

Amidst the chaos and 'noise' of the event, I was given a stand for Just Be Kind Dog Food (and the banner Dogs Go Plant-Based that I registered as) in a peaceful part of the hall and my experience was an overwhelmingly positive one.

When things are at their worst as we have in the veterinary industry at the moment; is when we are all most responsive to change.

Our friendly stand had the loveliest vets find us. I was so fortunate to have organised Emma from Bristol who brought her gorgeous plant-based Spaniel Willow with her (our 'cover girl' for Just Be Kind), and what an inspiration she proved to be for all the vets hugging and stroking her  - they all remarked on how very soft she was  - yes a result of being on a healthy plant-based diet of Give A Dog A Bean, MicroBell, Greta dry food and Solo Vegetal for all her life!

The vets who visited our stand and came to the talk I gave, were hungry for information to learn about the exciting innovations happening in this space at such an astonishing rate - we offered hope and a future, and they just wanted to learn as much as they could - see a selection of some of the slides I used in my talk below.

“What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make”

- Dr Jane Goodall
Dr Jane Goodall with Prof Andrew Knight
I did find myself having to choke back my tears as I mentioned the passing of our leader of kindness Dr Jane Goodall and how much it affected me.
The hope I live with, is that she had travelled 300 days a year until she was ninety (!) spreading her message of compassion and how we must work together to care for our only home that we have and our animals; and she had bumped into Prof Andrew Knight so many times on her travels, as he too travels 300 days a year spreading his message about dogs and cats on a vegan diet and the impact on their health and that of our planet!
With such important people driving this change, and with the veterinary industry in such turmoil, people are finding it so much easier to listen to innovation and sustainability and compassion - everything that offers them hope and a future! 💚
