Sharpei Senna who had kidney disease that reversed on a plant-based diet

What a joy to receive this email from Cathy about her elderly rescue boy Senna who suffered from chronic kidney disease - I was as overjoyed to read it as she was!

"Hi Arielle,

I have some amazing news!! 🙂

My 13-year-old Shar Pei, Senna, was diagnosed a year ago with Stage 2 CKD. A year on, my vet has confirmed he is now at Stage 1 !!!

Since his diagnosis we put him onto the Solo Vegetal (dry) with Give A Dog A Bean, extra veggies, Omega Daily Oil, Vitamin B capsules, Slippery Elm, Pumpkin Powder and kidney-friendly home-made treats. He is doing great!!!

A massive thanks to you for all your help and advice, and your wonderful products, which have obviously been key to Senna's results.

Here is what my vet said:

"Just to let you know that Senna's blood results are great! His red and white cells are all normal, so no signs of anaemia or inflammation. His liver levels are well within the normal reference range and his kidney levels have lowered and are in the normal range as well now!

His urine is still dilute but no signs of any infection or blood. I can confirm that he is now at Stage 1.

I am really pleased with his results so carry on doing as you are!"

How amazing is that!

I couldn't wait to email you Arielle and let you know 😊

All the best to you

Warm regards Cathy

Warmest congratulations to Cathy for transitioning Senna onto a diet that is the best for firstly Senna's skin (Shar peis are renowned for having skin sensitivities), and then reversing his kidney disease with the same diet - wonderful...and it also happens to be the most ethical diet around 😊

Please note that kidney disease is NOT a curable condition in both humans and dogs and requires careful maintenance of the remaining healthy kidney tissue which is what makes Senna's partial 'recovery' and improvement even more remarkable!!

The usual route is for vets to prescribe a veterinary prescription renal diet such as the one shown below made from pig fat, animal byproducts and fish oils instead of pure Omega 3 Daily.

Read the latest study here from Nottingham Vet School showing how renal prescription diets may be inadequate.

Which star products benefitted Senna's kidney recovery?

Give A Dog A Bean trays JUST BE KIND BEST SELLERGIVE A DOG A BEAN NATURAL INGREDIENTS

6% Faba Bean Protein, Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Pumpkin Seeds, 3% Green Beans, Papaya, Safflower Oil, Blueberries, 2% Kidney Beans, Sunflower Seeds, Quinoa, Kale, Minerals, Hemp Seeds, Psyllium Husks, Algae, Inulin, Chamomile

As well as making up a complete diet, Give A Dog A Bean’s ingredients also have a number of health benefits for the body, in particular the kidneys:

  • Bean and Quinoa protein is chosen as a valuable pure protein source with no bioaccumulated toxins as found in animal byproduct proteins.
  • Added Hemp Seeds and Algae provides the essential Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
  • Blueberries are chosen for their antioxidant properties. They are characterised by a high fibre content, which has a beneficial effect on removing toxins and aiding the kidneys. Minerals such as iron, magnesium, calcium and potassium are abundant in blueberries as well as high levels of Vitamins B and E.
  • Papaya is another superfood that is added as it contains one of the highest levels of natural digestive enzymes of all the fruit for maximum absorption of nutrients.
  • Sweet Potato is rich in nutrients and fibre and contains large amounts of Vitamins A, C and E, as well as essential fibre. Due to a low sodium content, sweet potato has a diuretic effect, so that detoxification processes are stimulated in the body and harmful waste products are more easily removed.
  • The addition of Carrots, Kale, Green Beans, Pumpkin Seeds and Psyllium Husks ensures that Senna gets his ‘5 a day’ to naturally feed his gut microbiome which in turn will look after all his kidneys (A latest study (Yang et al Jan 26) indicates that diets rich in plant foods may protect against chronic kidney disease (CKD) in people. High intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains was associated with reduced inflammation and metabolic stress)
  • Give a Dog A Bean is a healthy, nutritionally complete, very tasty plant-based food that can be used for any dogs with kidney concerns.

What is in Solo Vegetal that makes it so effective for Senna?

Vegan vet's dog with a solo vegetal bag

Natural Ingredients:
Micronised rice, potato and pea protein, white oats and hulled oats, einkorn wheat, buckwheat, spelt, vegetable oils and fats (including evening primrose oil and borage oil), potato flakes, dried beet pulp and chicory, isolated vegetable protein, hydrolysed vegetable proteins, wheatgerm, micronised dried carob flour, dry brewer’s yeast, minerals, flaxseed, dried carrots, tomatoes, apples, spinach and herbs, fructo-oligosaccharides, yeast hydrolysates.

There are NO GMO ingredients and although the ingredients do mention wheat (known to be an allergen in dogs); buckwheat is in fact a seed and it contains many beneficial nutrients.

Einkorn wheat is chosen for its antioxidant properties as well as being loaded with the essential nutrients zinc, iron, potassium, riboflavin, and vitamins B6 and A.

All very important for kidney health.

All of these ingredients actively benefit the gut microbiome which again improves the kidney function as no inflammatory animal or fish ingredients are added at all with their bioaccumulated toxins.

What about the benefits of Omega 3 Daily Algae oil?

Our Omega 3 Daily made from pure microalgae without any of the heavy metal concerns that we have in fish oil; is the true 'magic potion' for Sennas' kidneys.
ANY inflammatory condition that your dog may suffer from such as kidney disease and cystitis will be naturally supported using pure Omega 3 Daily!
It isn't just the pure and high levels of Omega 3 DHA and EPA that support these conditions, but we've gone even one step further with the important addition of the antioxidant Astaxanthin that is sourced from a bright pink microalgae.
Astaxanthin is a powerhouse in that it is 150 times stronger as an antioxidant (a substance that fights damaged cells) than the beta carotene in carrots!!! No wonder it is so beneficial to dogs such as Senna in reversing his kidney disease!
