What is microbial biotic protein?

Microbial protein is obtained through an innovative process from Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath as yes first discovered in the hot springs in Bath!) It is a natural, methanotrophic microorganism that uses methane as an energy source  - you cannot get more sustainable than that as it feeds off fossil fuel! This protein is produced through a special fermentation process and provides particularly high-quality and easily digestible proteins and dogs love its umami taste.

A study by Oba et al. (2023) confirms that microbial biotic protein has high digestibility and contains ALL essential amino acids, making it a complete protein source for your dog. By using microbial protein and the delicious grain-free natural ingredients in MicroBell, this food is hypoallergenic and therefore particularly suitable for dogs with sensitive digestive systems or allergies.

The other best bit is that this microbial biotic protein has a mild umami flavour that dogs just LOVE so you can feed your dog a cruelty free food that is not only good for them, but good for our planet too!

Feeding recommendation

Feeding recommendation for wet trays only:

Body weight / Daily amount
1 - 3 kg      100 - 300 g
3 - 8 kg      300 - 600 g
8 - 14 kg      600 - 900 g

Always provide fresh water. Can be used as part of a balanced diet for your dog and mixed with the Microbell dry food, so halve the amount fed when combining the wet and dry.

Weight of your dog and amount of Microbell dry food per day

1 - 5 kg 25 – 90 g

5 kg - 10 kg 90 – 155 g

10 - 20 kg 155 – 255 g

20 - 40 kg 255 – 430 g

40 - 65 kg 430 – 620 g

> 65 kg 9 g / kg body weight

Please adjust the amount of food to the age, breed and activity of your dog and halve the amount of feeding with the wet food. Divide the amount of food into 2-3 meals per day and always provide fresh water.

To keep costs down and enhance the gut health of your dog, wholefood fresh home cooked ingredients can also be added to your dog's diet.

The science behind Just Be Kind

Every Just Be Kind recipe is built on published veterinary nutrition science. Here are the key studies Dr. Arielle draws on — translated into plain English.

Dr. Arielle's note

"I reference these studies when speaking to sceptical vets about my patients' diets. The evidence for nutritionally complete plant-based feeding has strengthened considerably since 2021."

Taste preference

Plant-based versus meat-based pet foods: Owner-reported palatability behaviours

Proof that vegan dog food diets are as palatable as meat-based or even raw in this significant study carried out during 2020 and published by Prof Andrew Knight in June 2021

Prof. Andrew Knight, 2020

Longevity

Largest Study of 2536 dogs showing dogs fed vegan diets were healthiest!

Dogs fed vegan diets clearly had the best health outcomes in this very large-scale study, and these results are consistent with prior studies in this field. – Prof Andrew Knight Sept 2024

Prof. Andrew Knight, 2024

Digestion

Dog domestication reveals adaptation to a starch-rich diet

A fascinating study proving how mutations in key genes occurred allowing increased starch digestion in dogs relative to wolves. These results indicate that early ancestors of modern dogs could thrive on a diet rich in starch.

Health Outcomes

Reported Health Benefits of a Vegan Dog Food - Dr Mike Davies (2022)

Davies (2022) surveyed 100 dog guardians who had switched to a nutritionally complete vegan dog food designed by UK vets. "The vegan food was acceptable (palatable), and appetite and body weight were not adversely affected."
