Pets at home STOPS Dry Plant-Based Dog Food

Pets at home own brand Wainwrights plant-based dry vegetarian dog food NO LONGER BEING MADE

Wainwrights dry food from Pets At Home NO LONGER AVAILABLE

What sadness to hear that Pets at Home have STOPPED making their only sustainable plant-based dry dog food option Wainwrights plant-based.

As a passionate plant powered vet wanting to spread the message about the solution to our dog's nutrition concerns with complete plant-based dog foods; I am particularly disappointed as I remember writing about the launch of Wainwright's plant-based dog food in 2022!

I have spoken 3 times at the London Vet Show and given countless talks to vet students at 5 different universities, and it has always been such a comfort to tell them that we have one large pet food company making an affordable option for people with this Wainwright's food by moving towards sustainability.

I have always delighted at putting up the slide about Wainwrights plant-based and telling students and vets that we have at least one corporate pet food companies following the science and producing hypoallergenic and sustainable dog food made from plants as all dog foods should be made.

Why has Pets at Home stopped production of Wainwrights plant-based dry food?

In 2022, Pets at Home had a drive towards sustainability with being the only corporate company to produce this plant-based option. They were also the only pet food company to promote the very first cultivated protein dog treats called Chick Bites that sold for 1 day only in one of their stores.

In 2024, they were one of the only large pet food corporates to have their shares drop in their retail sector (not their veterinary sector). As we know, there is far more profit to be made from the heavily subsidised meat-based industry byproducts (read here about 'The Shocking Truth of How Subsidies Impact the Cost of Plant-Based vs. Animal Meat')

They only want to drive up their profits to satisfy their investors which means that they have chosen to ignore their pledge outlined in their Sustainability Report to always choose the most sustainable ingredients possible as shown below.

They have done exactly the same as multi-million pound company Butternut Box who removed their only sustainable plant-based fresh dog food after achieving their B-Corp certification and now make NO mention at all of any plant-based sustainable options in their sustainability report!
It is NOT sustainable to use the byproducts of the heavily subsidised animal-agriculture industry, but it is even less sustainable to use human grade meat-based ingredients.
Hills, Royal Canin and Nestle Purina have all shied away from moving towards any sustainable plant-based options but have chosen to concentrate on their highly processed hydrolysed veterinary meat-based pet food diets instead that bring in the greatest return to their multi-billion pound businesses as exposed here.

What is the new Ruff's Recipe branding for Pets at Home in 2026?

What sadness for me as a passionate plant powered vet who runs my entire ethical business around finding the best plant-based or fermentation proteins and pure Omega 3 Algae oils for my own dog Ruff; to see that Pets at Home have called their new range of dog food replacing Wainwrights with Ruff's Recipe!

Pets at Home Ruff's Recipes
Screenshot above from their website shows that ALL the products will contain meat, fish, lamb, chicken, salmon with NO sustainable options.
They have NOT even followed the science, as they have chosen flaxseeds as their Omega 3 source which is shown to NOT be as bioavailable as an Omega 3 source compared to Omega 3 from Algae oil as we have in our supplement..
Ruffs Recipe uses flaxseed
The only sustainability they have achieved, is to choose aluminium trays exactly as we have with our Give A Dog A Bean and Jumping Jack trays that are packaged in cardboard packaging too!

To all of you reading this post and feeding your dog a pure complete plant-based diet, I am absolutely in awe of you!

I imagine you are as disappointed as I am about not being able to buy a 'cheaper' option for your dog when you were buying Wainwrights plant-based.

I so appreciate that the foods we offer are on the pricier side as we have not been swayed by choosing any cheap ingredients in our foods to cut costs to increase our profit margins as Pets at Home are doing by choosing to go down the animal byproduct route rather than pure plants and Omega 3 from Algae.

I just say a huge THANK YOU to you for supporting Just Be Kind and buying from us so that we can continue to provide you with the most sustainable and premium quality available for your dog with so much more to come!

If you are unable to afford the foods, do not forget that we offer supplement specials and wholefood recipes if home cooking so that you are able to feed your dogs on quality home cooked ingredients too!
