Health Benefits

As well as making up a complete diet, Give a Dog a Bean's ingredients also have a number of health benefits for the body, in particular the skin, heart and gut.

Bean and Quinoa protein provides an optimal amino acid profile for your dog.

Hemp Seeds and Algae provide essential Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, leading to a soft and healthy coat and fully supporting a healthy skin barrier for dogs with sensitive skin.

Blueberries are chosen for their antioxidant properties. They are characterised by a high fibre content which has a beneficial effect on digestion. Minerals such as iron, magnesium, calcium and potassium are abundant in blueberries, as well as high levels of Vitamins B and E.

Papaya is a superfood added for its high levels of natural digestive enzymes.

Sweet Potato is rich in nutrients and fibre and contains large amounts of Vitamins A, C and E, as well as essential fibre. Due to its low sodium content, sweet potato has a diuretic effect, so that detoxification processes are stimulated in the body and harmful waste products are more easily removed.

Carrots, Kale, Green Beans, Pumpkin Seeds and Psyllium Husks ensure that your dog gets their five a day to naturally feed their gut microbiome, which in turn will look after your dog's health naturally.

Give a Dog a Bean is a healthy, nutritionally complete, very tasty plant-based food for your dog.

WHY NO PEA PROTEIN OR YEAST?

Give a Dog a Bean is the only plant-based wet food in the world to contain no yeast and no pea protein. We chose to omit pea protein as we have had dogs even show intolerances to peas. The same goes for yeast intolerances — dogs that suffer from yeast infections on their skin and in their ears tend to have a yeast intolerance in their diet.

Along with Gentle Rosie and Jumping Jack, these are the only foods in the UK that have no yeast or animal proteins in it for your sensitive dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Give a Dog a Bean nutritionally complete?

Yes! Every tray is a complete and balanced meal for adult dogs, meeting all FEDIAF nutritional guidelines.

It contains all essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals your dog needs, including Taurine, L-Carnitine, DL-Methionine, and Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. You don't need to add any extra supplements and it is made to be enjoyed with wholesome, hearty ingredients.

Why does this food contain no pea protein or yeast?

Give a Dog a Bean is the only plant-based wet food in the world formulated without pea protein or yeast. Some sensitive dogs suffer from intolerances to both - peas could be a trigger for digestive issues, and yeast is frequently linked to skin infections and ear problems. We removed them entirely so even the most sensitive dogs can eat this food safely.

My dog has itchy skin and allergies — will this help?

It's designed specifically for dogs like yours. Give a Dog a Bean is free from every common canine allergen — no animal proteins, no soya, no corn, no grains, no additives, no yeast.

Hemp Seeds and Algae provide Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids to support a healthy skin barrier, while Blueberries and Papaya add natural soothing anti-inflammatory and digestive support. Most owners notice a visible difference within 2–4 weeks.

How do I transition my dog onto Give a Dog a Bean?

Gradually over 2–3 weeks. Start by replacing 25% of their current food with Give a Dog a Bean, increasing every few days until they're fully transitioned. Dogs on raw or meat-based diets may need the full 3 weeks to allow their gut microbiome to adjust. You can mix it with dry hypoallergenic biscuits, sweet potato, or cooked vegetables to add variety and stretch each tray even further.

Can I mix Give a Dog a Bean with my dog's current food?

Absolutely — and it's actually the recommended way to transition. Mix it with dry biscuits, cooked sweet potato, mashed beans, carrots, tofu, or even our grain-free natural treats to add variety and make each tray go further.

You can also use it as a topper over homemade fresh food. Dr Arielle feeds her own dog Ruff this way — it's a flexible food that works as a complete meal on its own or as part of a wholefood plant-based diet.

The science behind Just Be Kind

Every Just Be Kind recipe is built on published veterinary nutrition science. Here are the key studies Dr. Arielle draws on — translated into plain English.

Dr. Arielle's note

"I reference these studies when speaking to sceptical vets about my patients' diets. The evidence for nutritionally complete plant-based feeding has strengthened considerably since 2021."

Taste preference

Plant-based versus meat-based pet foods: Owner-reported palatability behaviours

Proof that vegan dog food diets are as palatable as meat-based or even raw in this significant study carried out during 2020 and published by Prof Andrew Knight in June 2021

Longevity

Largest Study of 2536 dogs showing dogs fed vegan diets were healthiest!

Dogs fed vegan diets clearly had the best health outcomes in this very large-scale study, and these results are consistent with prior studies in this field. – Prof Andrew Knight Sept 2024

Digestion

Dog domestication reveals adaptation to a starch-rich diet

A fascinating study proving how mutations in key genes occurred allowing increased starch digestion in dogs relative to wolves. These results indicate that early ancestors of modern dogs could thrive on a diet rich in starch.
